What is a Bundt Cake

Chances are, you’d know a bundt cake if you saw one. Yet, despite its recognizable shape, many wonder if there’s more to this understated dessert. Let’s take a closer look at all your bundt cake questions.

What Is a Bundt Cake?

A bundt cake is a cake baked in a special donut-shaped pan. For this delicious treat, it’s all about shape and not necessarily a specific recipe. The shape can be traced back to the Gugelhupf, a cake with origins in Central Europe.

While almost any cake can be baked in a bundt pan, bundt cakes are most often made of denser cakes with a tighter crumb, such as pound cakes.

Who Named the Bundt Cake?

So, where did the bundt cake get its name? It all began with a man named H. David Dalquist. He had founded a cookware company called Nordic Ware and was approached by friends to create a modern version of the classic Gugelhupf pan. The bundt pan was born (named after Bundkuchen, the German name for the Gugelhupf cake). Today, Nordic Ware’s classic bundt cake pans remain a best-seller

Bundt Cake Pans

Bundt cake pans come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The classic bundt pan features contrasting soft domes and sharper peaks. Bundt cake sizes are determined by the number of cups it can hold. Most classic bundt pans are about 10 inches and hold 10-12 cups of batter.
